#798 – The Watch Story 2.0

I heard a story the other day. A grandson was rummaging through his grandfather’s things and he came across a vintage watch. The grandson asked, what do you think this watch is worth, grandpa?

Well, he said, I don’t know grandson. Take it to the watchmaker and get yourself a price. Once you have a price, bring the price back to me. When the Grandson returned, he explained, the watchmaker said $5. The grandson was happy.

Then the Grandfather said. Now, Take it to the jeweler and get yourself a price. Once you have a price, bring the price back to me. When the grandson returned, he explained, the jeweler said $500. The grandson was excited.

Then the Grandfather said, a third time. Now, take it to the antique collector and get yourself a price. Once you have a price, bring the price back to me. When the grandson returned, he explained, the collector said $500,000. The grandson was overwhelmed.

To the horologist [the art or science of making timepieces or of measuring time] it was a timepiece, to the jeweler it was a showpiece, but to the collector it was a masterpiece. It is 100% in your control, whether you are going to be someone’s timepiece, someone’s showpiece or someone’s masterpiece.

I want to challenge you, to see the story from a different perspective. Instead of you seeing yourself as the timepiece, what if you saw yourself as the boy, the grandson.

If the timepiece is not a person, but rather a piece of time or a moment in time. Then the timepieces are the experiences, the tests, the trials, the traumas and the tribulations, that have changed us irrevocably.

If you begin to see yourself as the grandson, then the different values placed on the timepiece translate to different perspectives.

To the watchmaker it was a watch, to the jeweler it was a showpiece and to the collector it was a masterpiece.

Some watch .. trauma. They replay the events in the mind and hearts over and over again, never to heal. Stuck in a cycle of pain and addiction.

Some show .. trauma. They share the same stories every where they go. Every action and every moment is about the hurt and the pain, they are victims. They sound strong, even defiant, but have a victim’s mindset.

Some master .. trauma. They face it and find ways to process the pain, the hurt and betrayal. They use the trauma to make them better people, more empathetic and minister from a victorious place of restoration.

Are you a victim, a victimizer or a victor?
